New Year’s Day, 2008

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on January 1, 2008 by JimMarch 15, 2012

For Faye and I, still in Panajachel, the old year ended with a bang, and the new one is beginning with a whimper. We were going to go on to Quetzaltenango this morning, but Faye woke up with an upset stomach, so we decided to stay put for another day. Nothing serious, just the usual minor intestinal distress that often happens about a week into a trip. It allows us to economize on the food budget for a day or so. Panajachel is a destination for partiers over the holidays, particularly around Christmas and New Year’s. There are plenty of … Continue reading →

Bus,Train, Plane, Taxi…

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on December 27, 2007 by JimMarch 15, 2012

We landed in Guatemala on Christmas morning after surfing our way southward by a variety of conveyances–from Ashland to Sacramento by Amtrak bus, Sacramento to Oakland by train, and a short hop to the airport by shuttle. Then the red-eye to Guatemala City with a change of planes in San Salvador, and finally a 45-minute taxi ride to Antigua. By the time we got to Antigua we had been up for more than 24 hours and things felt a bit surreal. We slept for a few hours, got up for meal, slept some more, got up and walked around again–mainly … Continue reading →

End of the Road

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on March 21, 2007 by JimMarch 15, 2012

I’ve spent the last few days back in Guatemala, on familiar ground around Lake Atitlan. It feels good to be back, and even more so, perhaps, because the time left is so short. I’ve been in Central America—Guatemala and Nicaragua—for nearly three months, but I don’t remember ever feeling less inclined to go back home. Just before Faye and I left Nicaragua we began thinking about our next adventure. Maybe someday we will leave home and not come back. But not just yet… It’s been a trip.

Pissin’ in the Wind

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on March 4, 2007 by JimMarch 15, 2012

One of the challenges of bus travel in Central America is making it to your destination without having to go to the bathroom. It is agonizing to be bumping along with a full bladder, playing mind games and calculating the seconds before the next stop. It is a problem all passengers face, of course. I don’t know how the locals cope with it; on travel days we try to limit our fluid intake before getting on the bus, then hope for the best. But there are times when that just doesn’t work out. There are more options for men than … Continue reading →

A Piece of Paradise

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on February 12, 2007 by JimMarch 15, 2012

The last week or so in Rio Dulce I spent searching for paradise, and I found at least a piece of it. My first destination was an isolated beach on the southern shore of Lake Izabel, about 10 miles from the bridge at Rio Dulce. Twenty-some years ago an ex-pat Canadian named Denny was sailing on the lake with a friend of his and found the beach, the only decent one on the lake. I’m not sure how Denny came to buy the place and build a little resort on it, but he did, and he called it, rather unimaginatively, … Continue reading →
