A Foot Out the Door

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on September 21, 2012 by JimMarch 3, 2014

We’ve got our bags packed, we’ve got bus tickets, plane tickets, and reservations for the first few nights in Bangkok. If all goes according to plan, a couple weeks from now we’ll be on the first leg of a four-month trip, first to Southeast Asia, then to Guatemala. (When I say that we are packed, that is not strictly true. Faye has a ways to go yet. But, for reasons probably best discussed with a therapist, I am pretty much always packed. So it averages out.) We’ll be covering some of the same ground In SE Asia we did a … Continue reading →

Road Trip to the Oregon Country Fair

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on July 19, 2012 by JimJuly 19, 2012

Here’s something from the sorta travel related department– I did a road trip in the new (to us) Delica down to the Oregon Country Fair, near Eugene (unfortunately Faye had to stay home and work). It was a test of the vehicle (ran fine) and the camper modification I did to it (needs some fine tuning). And, of course, it was a chance to immerse myself in three days of altered reality, the kind that reconnects me with various parts of my past. For those not familiar with the Oregon Country Fair, its roots go back to the counter-culture 60s. … Continue reading →

Not With a Bang, But a Whimper

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on February 27, 2011 by JimApril 16, 2012

A couple of weeks before the end of our trip–we’re home now–my laptop died. No screeching, or scratching, or warning of any kind. It just died in its sleep. I’ll admit to being more attached to my laptop than most, so I felt like I had lost a good friend. (Is it a Mac thing?) But in practical terms what I lost was a couple months of emails and photos, and the ability to update this blog. That is bad enough, but at least I had a backup on an external drive at home. So that is what I am … Continue reading →

San Cristóbal de las Casas

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on January 29, 2011 by JimMarch 22, 2012

After two and half weeks of indolence at the beach we were about as rested and ready to move on as we were likely to get. So we put our traveling clothes back on and got an overnight bus into Mexico’s southern mountains, to the town of San Cristóbal de las Casas,  in the state of Chiapas. Now that we’re here, we’re thinking we should have come sooner (though I can’t say I regret any of those days of swinging in a hammock, reading and listening to the ocean.) The last time we were in San Cristóbal was nearly 14 … Continue reading →

A Book and a Hammock

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on January 13, 2011 by JimMarch 18, 2011

Sun, sand, sea breezes–this part of our trip is easier to explain to those who ask, “What do you do down there anyway?” For the past week or so I’ve done little else but hang in a hammock and read a book, with the occasional walk on the beach and nightly sunset supervision. A couple weeks, ago as we were spending another night in the chilly highlands of Guatemala, we decided we needed to go someplace to warm up and relax. The beaches of Guatemala are nothing to brag about, so we decided to make the trek up the coast … Continue reading →
